Ormus Bluntsunder - Gnome Blacksmith

Ormus is a blacksmith, like his father, his grandfather before him, great grandfather before that, and his...well, you get the point. What makes Ormus a little different from his fellow dwarves is that he isn't a dwarf but a gnome and the adopted son of Vatgren Bluntsunder.

Gnomes of Golarion (2010) by Christopher Burdett/Paizo Publishing; Art Inspiration for Omus; Gnome Blacksmith,

Physical Description

Ormus stands 3 feet tall with long blue hair. Ormus appears thin when wearing blacksmith garb, but it hides a muscular frame. His arms are covered in dwarven clan tattoos.

Backstory

Found near a vein of silver ore deep underground by a group of dwarves, Ormus's life would have almost ended there if it weren't for Vatgren Bluntsunder. A blacksmith by trade, Vatgren was along to rate the quality of any ore the dwarves might mine. While the other dwarves ignored the cries of the abandoned infant, Vatgren stopped. Ignoring the stares of his clan members, he scooped the baby up and brought it with him. He named the boy Ormus, the name of his great grandfather, cementing his place in the clan.

Ormus worked alongside his father as soon as he could walk. It was hard initially for Ormus, as he lacked the physical strength to handle much of the equipment. As time passed, Ormus grew more robust and was trained by his father in the art of blacksmithing. His love for the trade grew with each passing day. The tools felt like an extension of his hands. He was cold when not in front of the blazing forge. Ormus, the adopted son of Vatgren, had found his purpose in this world.

Ormus took over the family business when his father retired. Ormus specializes in crafting armor from materials of all kinds. He's an artist, able to pull from a chunk of ore a masterpiece only he can see. He may be the shortest member of the clan, but he is considered a dwarf by the rest of the clan.

Quick Reference Traits

Personality Traits. Normally quiet, but quick with a smile or laugh.
Ideals. The clan is everything, and Ormus will die to protect it.
Bonds. To his father, the clan, and his craft.
Flaws. Loses track of time when working.

Adventure Hooks

  1. Ormus hires the party to explore inside a nearby mine where he has heard there is a massive vein of mithral. The only problem is he's also heard it runs through a goblin settlement

  2. Ormus has forged his masterpiece, a suit of glorious plate mail, which he needs to hand deliver to a noble in a nearby city. Ormus hires the party to escort him and the armor on his trek to deliver the armor.

  3. The fires of the great forge of Ormus's clan are going out, and no one knows why. The party travels deep into the mountain, possibly the plane of fire, to find the root cause.

Unit 51-378103 - Rogue Modron

Unit 51-378103, or simply Unit 51 or just 51, has long traveled the multiverse in search of new experiences and to find who they truly are. While they might have once been just a 'modron', they are now... something different. They have gone 'rogue' and wish to know why they went rogue, what it means to go rogue, and how this fits into the plans of the multiverse. Everything has an orderly reason, and if Unit 51 could just figure out the way of it, they might rejoin the ranks of modron once again.

Rogue Modron, Dragon #354 (April 2007) by Julie Dillon/Paizo Publishing; Art inspiration for Unit 51

Physical Description

This curious creature appears to be a large, square-shaped metal cube with a humanoid-like face. Two mechanical arms, legs, and wings sprout from this central cube and it carries a heavy pack of seemingly random objects.

Backstory

Formed into being on the 51st cog of its home plane in Mechanus, Unit 51-378103 is a modron who has gone rogue. Something flipped in Unit 51's mind, causing it to suddenly exude free will and think for itself. It lost its connection to its kin, no longer able to communicate with the cog hivemind, and is now adventuring across the multiverse. What 51 is looking for are answers, though these answers aren't ones it is likely to find.

What little Unit 51 remembers of its time on its home plane is limited, and it is slowly losing more of those memories as it forgets what it was once like to be surrounded by other modrons and to be part of something wholly and completely. It remembers finding strange objects that caught its attention, allowing it to see its reflection and begin to wonder. This line of thought snapped Unit 51 out of its hive mind and found this poor modron exiled from its home plane, unable to remember why it was turned away so long ago.

Now, it travels the multiverse, collecting random junk and searching for a reason it was sent away. Perhaps to find a greater meaning for all modrons.

Quick Reference Traits

Personality Traits. Everything has its place, even if it isn't obvious.
Ideals. Being so far from order and law, everything is so chaotic and wonderful. But also terrifying.
Bonds. Freedom is a curse! Unit 51 hopes to one day figure out why they were cursed and return to their place within Modron society.
Flaws. Unit 51 can not quickly react to new situations and might spend hours mulling over new information and what its impacts are.

Adventure Hooks

  1. Unit 51 believes that it was made a 'rogue modron' by the will of Primus to explore all of the multiverse and bring back this 'fresh perspective'. It is seeking allies to travel with it to its next destination, a wild jungle with plenty of chaotic beasts that it can study and learn how to be 'wild' from.

  2. Unit 51 has learned of several of its kin trapped in a laboratory where they are being experimented on. Perhaps its true mission is to find all of its kin and save them. It is looking for those willing to help it storm the tower and rescue the captured modrons. It will make the plan of course and everything will go off without a hitch.

  3. Unit 51 wishes to travel back to its cog home plane where it can try and prove that it is just as lawful and orderly as any other. The only problem is that if it shows up, it'll be destroyed. Perhaps the party is willing to go and talk to the others and deal with the paperwork. It might take years, but Unit 51 is willing to wait for their return.
