Owain Morgen (Spy) & Ylonoa "Granny" Pilkaran (Abjurer)
Owain Morgen - Royal Advisor & Spy
Few would look at Owain and know that he is an advisor to King Hye, the ruler of the Auroran empire. Owain doesn't even look like someone of importance, but rather a cut-throat or common brigand. This carefully tailored look is a disguise that Owain assumes to slink into the shadows and protect his king from assassins, criminals, and more.
Physical Description
Owain is a human with dark hair braided to stay out of his eyes and muddied clothes that obfuscate his form in the shadows. He is physically strong, standing a few inches under six feet, and moves with an easy flowing motion, almost as if he is dancing from shadow to shadow.
Backstory
Owain Morgen was a common pickpocket, stealing from those in the Suroran capital of Surora. While he never thought he'd amount to much, believing he'd one day die with a knife in his gut from a gang fight - that all changed when Hye, who would eventually become king in a decade, decided to put on peasant garb and explore the city that he would one day rule.
Owain picked Hye's pockets, finding a large purse filled with more gold than he had ever seen before. Curiosity overwriting any sense of preservation, Owain followed Hye a few more streets until Hye took a wrong turn down an alley and thieves were about to attack him. While Owain had never thought of himself as a hero, he couldn't stop himself from interfering and saving Hye from a deadly beating.
Afterward, Hye went back to his castle covered in bruises and blood, relaying the story of how he was saved by Owain - though at the time, Hye didn't know that Owain had robbed him or that Owain was a thief. The King, wanting to reward the man who had saved his son's life, sent his guards into the city to find Owain and bring him back.
Over the years, Owain became friends with Hye, and they still tease each other about how they met. Nowadays, Owain is a secretive advisor to Hye, though he spends most of his nights wandering the city and the surrounding areas, keeping tabs on the underworld of thieves and dark dealings.
Quick Reference Traits
Personality Traits. Owain dislikes any attention shown to him, preferring to stick to the shadows.
Ideals. He prefers his freedom to the strict laws he is supposed to uphold.
Bonds. Owain owes his new life to King Hye.
Flaws. He is reluctant to trust others to handle tasks.
Adventure Hooks
Owain has learned that a thieves' guild in Surora, the Fat Goose, has gained a foothold on many of the judges in the courts. He is hoping to have some help in bringing down the thieves' guild and ensuring that the Fat Goose is disassembled.
Spies of Ninlil have been sneaking past the borders and seem to be building up to something big and dangerous. Owain is hiring adventurers to 'accidentally' stumble upon these clandestine meetings of Ninlil spies.
King Hye has a risky job that he does not want him, or anyone close to him, have their name attached to. Owain needs discrete adventurers who are willing to go to Okaford, a city that was recently wrested from Suroran's control, and find out who on the Suroran side helped Ninlil steal the city.
Ylonoa “Granny” Pilkaran - Flame Augurer
A neighborhood fixture, Ylonoa sits perched on her stool at the front of her market. Ylonoa sits behind a half door, living the simple life of a shopkeeper. She spends most of her time smiling and waving to people as they walk by, engaging in pleasant conversations with tourists and gossiping with the locals. Known to all the locals as Granny, she has been a fixture in the canal area for over 50 years. Her past is a bit more complicated.
Physical Description
Standing barely over 3 feet tall, Granny has surprisingly soft, smooth skin and long white hair. She normally wears a simple dress complimented by understated but exquisite jewelry.
Backstory
Granny was not always the kind and matronly woman everyone adores. She was once known as the Fire Augurer of Nedur, a name that struck fear into entire nations. Stories say she would walk onto the battlefield alone, raining fire and destruction upon opposing armies. Other tales tell of the Fire Augurer unleashing scores of creatures made from flame, fearless as she walked into the heart of an enemy's forces, flanked by her fire minions. Whether such stories are true or not, only Granny knows the truth.
After leveling the city of Bernath with a torrent of flame from above, Granny stopped at the city's gates as her allies rushed ahead. Tears welled up in her eyes, for the veil of blind righteousness was lifted, and she witnessed the destruction she had caused for the first time. With tears streaming down her face, Granny turned around and walked away from the city. As the generals demanded to know where she was going, she turned to look at them with a sad smile and blinked out of sight.
Settling in Ferrum, she closely guards her past, knowing that Nedur is still searching for her. She is arguably one of the most lethal individuals in the city, unbeknownst to everyone.
Quick Reference Traits
Personality Traits. Ylonoa believes a person can change and redemption can be found.
Ideals. All people have goodness somewhere inside themselves.
Bonds. Ylonoa's neighbors are her family.
Flaws. Overwhelming guilt for her past deeds.
Adventure Hooks
Granny's true identity is revealed, and the forces of Nedur have arrived to arrest her for desertion. Not wanting to use her magic within the city limits, the party must defend her and either resolve the situation with Nedur forces or get her out of Ferrum alive.
Gangs are fighting for control of her neighborhood, terrorizing locals and destroying property. Granny hires the party to remove the hooligans but not kill them.
A Teoviso army is now marching towards Ferrum, forcing Granny back into action. She hires the party as her muscle and support.
