Material for Alchemist's Supplies in Tool Craft

I recently had someone reach out and ask about what materials that each recipe in the Alchemist’s Supplies would need in Tool Craft. I had originally thought to include ingredients (as you can see in the Variant Rules which provides a few ideas), but I ultimately decided against it as I had an idea of an Alchemist being able to mix and combine what chemicals they need.

They are alchemists after all. A big idea tied in with alchemy is the transmutation of metals into gold, so the ingredients were less important. What was important that it would cost money to produce these items and an alchemist could find ingredient substitutions as needed, but… I’m not one to give up an article idea.

This week, I’m going through all of our Alchemical Recipes in Tool Craft and providing ingredients. In addition, I’ll provide a PDF of this list to make it easy for you to reference at the bottom of the page.

That said, this is an article and it is not likely that I’m going to be editing Tool Craft with the below ingredients, which means I can do a bit more than just say “Purified Ooze” as the ingredients for Acid. Instead, I can say something like, “The alchemist must combine purified ooze and stabilizing crystal dust, stirring clockwise over an open flame. When combined, carefully press the ooze and crystal mixture through a sieve and allow to simmer slightly for 8 hours.

I also want to clarify that all text below is flavor only. While the descriptions can provide insights as to how an alchemist might’ve failed to create their item, the text below shouldn’t be taken as mechanical effects.

Alchemist’s Supplies

Acid

The alchemist must combine purified ooze and stabilizing crystal dust, stirring clockwise over an open flame fueled to a high temperature. When combined, carefully press the ooze and crystal mixture through a sieve and allow to simmer slightly for duration.

Alchemical Elementals

Elemental seed crystals are ground with a moonstone mortar and copper pestle until it shimmers like starlight. The dust is then suspended in purified mineral oil and must be left to harmonize for several hours.

Alchemical Silver

Silver filings are shaved thin from ritual-purified ingots and suspended in a mixture of mineral oil and pulverized runestone ore. The solution is gently rotated in a lead-glass vessel until it develops a silver sheen.

Alchemist’s Fire

The still warm ashes of firenewts are mixed with tar over a flame fueled by high temperature burning coal. Sulfur and resin are added in precise ratios while the concoction is stirred relentlessly to avoid spontaneous ignition.

Anxious Energy

Ephedra leaves are lightly bruised with a copper pestle and placed in a distillation series where its essence is extracted drop by drop into a flask of ironwood that leeches its special properties into the elixir.

Assassin’s Blood

The alchemist must gather sun-dried acidic slime residue that has cracked, but not decayed. The residue will be glass like and must be ground into a fine powder, and then reconstituted with fresh acid from a green dragon. This mixture is then suspended in gelatinized venom from temple snakes.

Blast Canister

Begin by grinding saltpeter, smokepowder, and charcoal into a powder so fine it clings like soot. Carefully pack into a canister of thinned stone, its interior etched with volatile acids to create fragmentation. The lid of the stone canister, made of hardened iron, must be sealed with damp resin that, when dried, flashes into fire when exposed to air.

Choking Gas

Ooze nodules, half-decomposed before being dried, are crushed with caustic peppers and sulfur. Grind to an acrid dust and placed into a heated lead-lined flask where a single drop of alcohol is added, instantly transforming the mixture into a foul vapor. The flask must be sealed immediately.

ClearWater

A mineral blend of calcium, magnesium, and sodium is powdered and oven-dried to remove lingering moisture. Powdered gelatin is stirred in slowly, before minute drops of liquid chloride salts are added, causing the mixture to transform from a fine powder to a gas to a solid pellet if properly mixed.

Dark Drops

Coagulated shadow sludge, like ink in water, is taken from the Plane of Shadows and distilled by dim light burning its impurities. It is then stirred slowly into a diluted herbal infusion, creating a pitch-black liquid that absorbs light.

Delayed Fuse

A thin cord, braided from firegrass and hemp, is soaked in a solution of sulfur and pulverized smokepowder. It must be carefully dried out or it spontaneously combusts.

Flame Strike

Alchemists must combine smokepowder and sulfur into a thick sludge treated with purified water. Bundles of dried twig are dipped in the sludge and then dried in a brass kiln until the residue cracks and dries.

Living Alchemical

The alchemical master must slice a sliver of its soul with a mageglass dagger. This fragment of soul must be bound in a matrix of celestial blood and gloom-essence, and then stirred in a golden crucible that transforms into a blackened chunk of coal if performed correctly. At the bottom of the now destroyed crucible is a sentient soulmatter, also known as a homunculus.

Lock Chalk

Grind smokepowder and saltpeter into chalk dust until the mix is dry and fine. Press into soft sticks in a leaded pan and hardened over flame.

Mutagen of Iron Mind

Take fermented, desiccated brain matter and apply tinctures of wormwood and ground hematite in a sealed copper flask at set intervals. Keep warm and, with a spoon made of lead, stir the mixture in an intricate pattern. Upon the final stir, you shall have a lump of organic matter that trembles when exposed to thoughts.

Mutagen of Regenerative Form

Start with rotting organic matter, amphibian works best, and feed it powdered ash from a phoenix burn and bile from a troll. As the alchemical ichor soaks in, encase in ice and add youth blood until it forms a lump of organic matter that appears like skin covered in veins.

Mutagen of Strength

Take a clump of muscle, the stronger the muscle, the finer the mutagen. Infuse the muscle with minotaur marrow and ferment in ash bark and bitterroot. While it soaks, heat a ceramic pot of fat from a hydra. When ready, combine all ingredients in the ceramic pot. A lump of organic matter will form that oozes blood and appears like raw muscle. Tastes of bitter.

Mutagen of Speed

Take powdered hummingbird bone and combine the plasma of quickling blood. Bake in a kiln filled with kudzu. Take mixture from heat and add reconstituted, purified earth. The organic lump looks of dry and crumbly earth, but smells of sweet grass.

Oil of Etherealness

Protomatter from the Ethereal Plane must be distilled and concentrated. When condensed into a gray oil, it forms into fog and then disperses into oil in a continuous cycle.

Oil of Sharpness

Enchanted vorpal shavings must be suspended within magically-treated oil that devours rust and impurities. The gelatinous base liquid holds the particulates in suspension while you finish the mixture over heat and in a silver cauldron tarnished by this process.

Oil of Slipperiness

Take secretions from a unique type of magical ooze that is incapable of capture. Harvest the ooze from the trails they leave behind as it is only a fool who thinks to capture them. Once secretions are stabilized in the usual matters, add thickening agents to form a sticky black salve that a true alchemist must be careful when handling or it forever be lost.

Philosopher’s Stone

Take healing potions and combine them with the bone powder of divine creatures, alchemical mercury, and fresh dust of fey. The mixture must be condensed under extreme cold magically treated to draw forth life and embed in the material. If done correctly, a reddish stone forms.

Potion of Growth

Take the blood of giant and combine with catalysts taken from magically-treated flowers. The mixture is then distilled with minerals of earth, that leech into the potion.

Potion of Healing

This simple potion is a distillation of subterranean mushrooms, purified water, and common herbs. Small trace elements are added, produced from the forge smoke and slag of a blacksmith, and the mixture is bottled in fine glass.

Potion of Healing, Greater

Craft like a potion of healing, but utilize a fungal strain that grows in dark caverns and tended to by fungal creatures. Be careful when treating with such creatures as they may curse their stock to spite you, which makes all potions created from their harvest that of poison.

Potion of Healing, Superior

Take rare herbs, carefully foraged from the Dark Below, and mix with fluids extracted from sentient oozes that feed on them. Be sure to keep direct sun light from exposing these ingredients or else its potency is reduced by half.

Potion of Healing, Supreme

Take herbs grown within the gardens of the fey and extract an elixir of sapphire and gold. Brew in a pot with moonlight as your heat, channeling primal forces into a condensed liquid that mends wounds.

Potion of Healing, Legendary

Petals from a once-in-a-decade flower, found on a solitary mountainside, form the base of this potion. Brew petals with the dew taken from the mountains of Heaven. Once distilled, combine with the reactants of phoenix tears.

Potion of Invisibility

Volatile chemicals and captured ethereal essence is sealed within a mirror flask. If improperly sealed, it explodes.

Purifying Scrub

Caustic lye is rendered from ash and mixed with willow bark extract that produces a beige cleansing brick.

Restorative Ointment

Make a mixture of aloe, honeymoss, and rootheart. Boil into a pungent green paste that must be kept in a pure ceramic flask and corked with ironwood.

Sight Burn

Volatile chemical powders, including whitefire salt and flashroot, are compressed. Add to a vial and sealed with a resin that burns when exposed to air.

Smelling Magic Salts

Take ammonia crystals and infuse with oils. Heat with raw arcane energy, infusing the mixture with magic and turning it into chunks of white stone.

Smokepowder

When a fire elemental dies, take what remains. The viscous black goo must be dried and chemically treated with stabilizing salts and ground into a fine white powder. Expose to water at your own risk.

Smokestick

Take clay treated with alchemical resin and mix with powdered charcoal. Shape into rods and bake with brimstone.

Sovereign Glue

Bring bones of magical beasts and fire heated by magic, and boil into a gelatinous collagen. Refine into a white adhesive with magically treated minerals, take care that the flask you seal the glue in is first treated with a small batch of magical oil.

Stone Solvent

Take fresh basilisk blood and treat with vinegarwort and vine ash. Stabilize the concoction and keep in darkness until ready to use.

Thunderstone

Volatile minerals from the Plane of Earth are worked into soft clay and then baked into a hard shell. Take a portion of smokepowder and two portions of a reagent and seal within the shell.

Truth Serum

Crush dreambloom seeds and steep in the venom of tropical grubs. The toxins slowly dissolve and leave behind an oily serum. If improperly prepared, causes horrific hallucinations.

Universal Solvent

Distill arcane-infused alcohols and planar salts. Thin the mixture until a white liquid is as thin as smoke and seal in a corked flask.

Vial of Golden Luck

Only the luckiest of our profession can succeed in this endeavor. If you are ill-fated, do not attempt. Take the sweetness of a unicorn’s horn, add the essence of a dragon’s hoard, and drip luck from your fingers into a golden flask.

Wizard Oil

Distill powdered runes in a concoction of honey and liquid moonlight. Slowly combine over a simmering heat until a thick, amber fluid forms. When cooled, it turns into a strange cream with an oil-like feel.
