The Burger Bomb - Cook's Utensils
Tool Craft, our comprehensive book on making Tools, Kits, and Supplies useful in any campaign, is almost here. To show how you can incorporate the book into your game, let's look at the Burger Bomb Recipe, just one of the over 30 recipes for Cook's Utensils we created for your bard, cleric, and wizard to enjoy after a long day of adventuring.
Burger Bomb
Everyday dish, rare recipe
Who would've thought putting a ground beef patty between two pieces of bread would be so delicious? After eating this sandwich, you are ready to take on the world.
The next time you roll a certain number on the d20 when making an attack roll, based on quality, and you would normally succeed against the target's AC, you score a critical hit. You lose this benefit if you finish a Long Rest.
When the burger goes Cold, it reduces in quality, making Minor quality Compost early.
Cost 25 gp; Ingredients Beef, bread, condiments
Cook Time 1 hour; Cold 1 hour; Compost 3 hours
Minor (DC 13) 19
Moderate (DC 15) 19-18
Masterwork (DC 18) 19-17
Fresh Requirements Just butchered beef, fresh bread
Fresh Benefit Lowers cooking DC by 2, costs an extra 7 gp
Scoring a critical hit isn't only game-changing when fighting evil creatures, but it's fun, too, since you get to roll more dice! By taking an hour out of your busy schedule to cook a burger for you or your friends, you'll give them a much better chance to do so.
The Burger Bomb is simple to make. First, gather your ingredients: beef, bread, and whatever condiments you desire. I've heard purple worm blood reduction is a wonderful substitute for ketchup. Once you have everything prepped and ready to go, it's time to start cooking. The Burger Bomb is an Everyday dish, so you'll spend an hour cooking your burger. Quality takes time, and this is no ordinary McDonald's burger you're making.
Once the hour is complete, you must make a Wisdom (Cook's Utensils) check. Looking at the recipe, you'll see there are three different target DCs. Since we are talking about Cook's Utensils, I like to think of the tiers this way:
Minor - You've overcooked your burger a bit, but it still tastes good.
An easy-to-make DC 13, and you score a critical hit on a 19 and 20.
Moderate - The burger is cooked to medium, which is ideal for most people.
Roll a 15 or better, and you score a critical hit on an 18/19/20.
Masterwork - Cooked to a perfect medium rare, your burger is flawless.
Cooking a perfect burger means rolling 18 or higher, but when you do so, you'll land a critical hit on a 17/18/19/20
Once you've finished cooking your burger, you should eat it when it's Fresh. A Fresh dish, or burger in this case, has just been cooked and, if consumed within an hour of its completion, grants all of its normal benefits. You can also eat the burger when it's Cold. A dish becomes cold after an hour of cooking it. A cold dish offers a reduced benefit and is no longer as effective as when it was first cooked. In this case, a Masterwork dish becomes a Moderate dish, Moderate becomes Minor, and Minor becomes Compost. Compost is the final stage for a dish. You can still eat it but get no benefits besides a full stomach.
Killing a monster can provide you with more than just gold and experience if you want to utilize the variant cooking rules included in Tool Craft. You can harvest and butcher the meat from your kills and use them in your recipes. Using monsters in your recipes may come with unexpected benefits or penalties. For example, making burger patties from a freshly killed Owlbear could grant you Keen Sight and Smell.
Tool Craft offers endless possibilities when you want to use your tools, kits, and supplies to do more than take up space in your backpack.
